Each year the MIM Program will bring its second year students on the business trip abroad. The trip is aimed to provide the students with knowledge in multinational companies and to broaden their perspective in marketing practices. This year 29 MIM students went to San Francisco, U.S.A. during 2 – 8 May 2005. They visited the companies namely : Intel Corporation, Genentech, Cisco Systems, Sybase and Wal-Mart.

Intel Corporation: was founded in 1968 to build semiconductor memory products. Intel introduced the world’s first microprocessor in 1971. Today, Intel supplies the computing and communications industries with chips, boards, systems, and software building blocks that are the ingredients of computers, servers and networking and communications products to all parts of the world.

Genentech: is the world’s leading biotechnology company, using human genetic information to discover, develop, manufacture and commercialize biotherapeutics that address significant unmet medical needs. Because of its overall performance, its management, its workplace culture, its contributions to the community, and its patient advocacy the company regularly receives awards and recognition from various international journals and organizations and is No. 1 on the “Top 10 Best Place to Work in Industry” list.

Cisco Systems: founded in 1984 by a small group of computer scientists from Stanford University, is the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet. Cisco Internet Protocol-based (IP) networking solutions are the foundation of the networks which are an essential part of business, education, government and home communications. Wal-Mart: founded in 1962, is the world’s largest retailer, with nearly US$ 290 billion in sales in the fiscal year ending January 31, 2005. The company employs 1.6 million associates worldwide through more than 3,600 facilities in the United States and more than 1,570 units in Mexico, Peurto Rico, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, China, Korea, Germany and the United Kingdom. Nearly 140 million customers per week visit Wal-Mart Stores worldwide. Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. empowers its associates to serve the needs of their communities through its “Good Works” initiative, and satisfies their customers with the “Every Day Low Prices” policy.

Apart from visiting the above multinational companies, students had the chances to stop by at many places of interest which are famous tourist attractions such as the Golden Gate Bridge, the Alcatraz, the Fisherman’s Wharf together with the Bay Cruising, etc. Since the hotel in which they were staying is located in the city center therefore the students had the benefits of doing their shopping and city exploring very conveniently.

In addition, an excursion to some other cities nearby has greatly captured the students’ attention. They enjoyed themselves in Monterey, driving through Carmel-by-the-sea, shopping at outlets in Gilroy, etc, which were their activities after concentrating on the day’s business trip.

The Program sincerely thanks Prof. Dr. Shyam Kamath the Director of the Transnational Executive MBA (TEMBA) Program, at California State University East Bay, who kindly arranged all the visits for our MIM students and also set up the reception dinner among the TEMBA students and MIM students at San Ramon Valley Conference Center. At this event, the students had the chance to attend the special session done by an executive of Wells Fargo Bank: the largest financial institution headquartered in the western U.S.
